Alongside his brother, he would assist their mother in finding materials for her crafts while farming the land. Their talents soon extended to creating wooden whistles, buckets, and birdhouses, which they sold alongside their mother's crafts to travelers passing through Charlotte on their way to the mountains. Following his time at the Ashville Postcard Company, Thomas faced unemployment during the Great Depression, prompting him to venture into the craft business. He utilized the skills he acquired in the wholesale industry to sell products created by local women, such as cornhusk dolls and woven pieces. Thomas also constructed a waterwheel to generate electricity, allowing him to establish a mill and expand his product line. Eventually, his son Lemuel Oates joined the company and would become its next manager. Lemuel had been involved in the business from a young age, as the products were crafted from cotton scraps leftover from sock production. These cotton scraps were ingeniously looped together in half-inch circles to create various products. After attending college and settling in Richmond, Lemuel returned to Bat Cave in December 1973 to assume control of the company. In 2007, his children Travis and Molly Oates Sherrill took over the business, ensuring its continued success.
